I was a junior in high school in 1964. Still haunted by what happened. Sitting here right now watching the Phillies play the Pirates in their new City Connect uniforms. A different world.
It was good to see you on Sunday. I am grieving with you as I realize the enormity of decisions you are now facing. So many good-byes, so many precious memories! Take a deep breath & take it step by step!
Another great piece, Don-- I am feeling a sliver of what you and Theresa are experiencing as I have started cleaning out my office, filled with 30 years of books and teaching (I dragged the stuff from Maryland to West Chester, a mistake that I am not making this time around). The office has also been a haven for things that I didn't want to store in my home, but I couldn't bear to toss. Thus, it features my childhood bookcase with all my Nancy Drews (I brought one home tonight the Nancy Drew I have in French-- I had brought it home with me from Nice). Of course, I have no memories of the Phillies-- save for a few games I went with all the Philadelphians--which I know I chatted through.
Its hard to downsize your memories. The Phils 1964 WS tix are thin and priceless. They are a keeper.
I have a box with sports ticket stubs. I have 10 World Series tickets including the Orioles 1970 clinching win (Brooks Robinson), Phils 1980 clinching game (where I afterwards became "Joe Unser"), and all 5 games of the Orioles 1983 series win over the Phils (Game 5 was Jim Palmer's last major league win). The ticket for the Phils June 10, 1981 5-4 win over Houston where Rose tied the NL hit record the day before the baseball strike and the Phils 7-3 loss to the Cards on August 10, 1981 where Rose broke the NL hit record during the first game after the strike.
Also Dr. J's last win - a 124-118 victory over the Bucks in the playoffs on May 1, 1987 (Doc scored 22 but the Bucks won the next game & series) and the ticket for the 1980 NBA Champ versus the Lakers where Doc did a 360 degree dunk around Jabbar in a 76rs win (I sometimes wrote down key info of the game on the stub). When we next downsize, these are all coming with me. - Jim
Some fine games. I went to a couple of them - including that 6/10/81 game. As I recall, Ryan was the starter, but when he left the game, the Phils mounted a huge comeback against Frank LaCourte that was capped off with a 3-run homer by Garry Maddox. (One year earlier, Maddox hit a game-winner in Game 5 of the LCS to put the Phils into the World Series. I met Maddox once, maybe 20 years later, in the Daily News offices. I mentioned LaCourte's name. He just smiled. Anyway, I don't have the stubs any longer, but I certainly have the memory.
You are right. I just checked my journal for 6/11/81. Rose got the only hit off Ryan until 2 outs in the 8th. Vukovich pinch hit a single and Ryan was pulled. 2 hits and a walk brought Maddox up who hit a 3-run HR. Carlton went 8 for the win making him 9-1. McGraw got his 7th save. We were actually rooting for Maddox to just tie the game as Rose was due up in the 9th. I had a ticket for the Atlanta-Phils game the next night but knew the strike was imminent.

I think 1964 defined the entire city - and still does.
if you change your mind, I will take those tickets and keep them safe for you this side of the Atlantic.

Didinger has a framed set of those tix too -- hardly worthless! But I wonder how many are actually out there?
