So true about the NYT Cooking comments! The first thing I read when I’m interested in a recipe. One of the funniest are the comments on Mark Bittman’s slow scrambled eggs…
Love the story . A worker at weaver’s way coop suggested to me that I buy the loose, grungy , misshapen carrots from Lancaster Pa instead of the clean, perfect , organic bagged carrots from
California. Guess what ? the difference in taste & texture are amazing raw or cooked . I doubt that the lacaster carrots can compete with your special “sandy carrots “ but they really made a carrot lover out of me !
Love carrots! I have always been baffled by the French love affair with tinned baby carrots and peas (you know the ones??)! Instant purée (mash) is also very popular! It always surprises me as I know NO-ONE in the UK who buys either of these! Haha!
We live exactly at the confluence of the two rivers that flooded, but on the 6th floor of an apartment building, so we were spared. Many of our neighbors--homes and businesses--have been impacted.
One of my favorite things when I Lived in France was the creativity with tubers...the grated turnip salads with garlic, olive oil and lemon juice. The cooked beets for sale in every corner deli. I didn't know about the carrots though!

Right! A recipe for chicken and rice. In the comments: I substituted tuna for the chicken and quinoa for the rice.
I got kind of curious about what gives a carrot AOC status, still haven’t found it exactly but here’s the 28 page requirements for a carrot to be red label: https://info.agriculture.gouv.fr/gedei/site/bo-agri/document_administratif-05bc9dea-fe39-4835-83d5-d56d968a3c2f/telechargement
Wow!!
Of course I had to read those comments. Hilarious.
I love it! I was going to write about these myself. They’re kind of incredible. Now they’re the only carrots I’ll buy over here.
And yes, France can get you a little bit excited about carrots. They are good.
Try them poached with salted butter!!
Who knew??! I'll try them. 🧡🥕
Wow, thanks for this! I had wondered about the "dirty" carrots but not enough to do the research. Now I will have to try them, merci!
Enjoy! Let me know what you think.

I wonder about those tinned carrots and peas--and mushrooms!
Beurk ! Tinned mushrooms - how metallic! It's odd, isn't it?!
Great article - and I can't wait to try them this summer! I so hope that you are doing well and Rennes is not in the flooded area.

Oh, my thoughts are with you all
Definitely want to try these on our next stay in France!

Would love to try them!
First time in 83 years I read an essay on carrots. Amazingly, I found it interesting. Nice work.
